Perfect Plaid Knit Beanie for Fall | Knitting Pattern | The Fall Beanie

I don’t care if it’s not fall yet, this is the most perfect beanie to get you in the fall spirit. When I say I love plaid, I FRICKING LOVE PLAID. Pretty much all of my favorite things in my home are plaid. And one of my favorite candies are the mallow creme pumpkins and candy corn. I love it. I buy it whenever I can, as soon as I can every single year. This year I am exploring all the knit beanie patterns I can so obviously I had to come up with the perfect plaid knit beanie. I had quite the time with this because running the yarn through kept pulling the body of the beanie inward and made it super tight. I was close to giving up after I got the women’s size down but realized I needed a different count for smaller sizes…. or did I? Nope, I just went down a needle size. The body of this beanie is made using a much much larger needle but trust the process. This helps keep the stretch and keeps your “extra” yarn that you’re carrying much looser and in turn gives us a beautiful non tight beanie.

I wrote this and have all my pictures in candy corn themed plaid because I am making these for my upcoming market, but I will definitely be adding some traditional buffalo plaid and I am hoping to add an adorable Christmas plaid later in the year.

Okay, so let’s get to it!

MATERIALS:

1 skein each of three different colors. (see notes for preselected colors)

16 inch circular knitting needles (depends on sizing, see notes.)

(4.5mm, 6.5mm) (5.0mm, 7.0 mm) (5.5mm, 8.0mm) This is my favorite set of knitting needles. I use this set because it has all the sizes I need, specifically to make this beanie, but feel free to use whatever your favorite circular needles are.

Scissors

Stitch marker

Yarn needle

Optional – branded tag and pompom

ABBREVIATIONS:

LTCO – long tail cast on

R – Round

K – knit

P – purl

K2tog – knit two stitches together

C1 (2) (3) – color 1 (2) (3)

B 1(2, 3 etc) – Block 1 (2,3 etc) see notes.

NOTES:

This pattern is made holding two strands (of the same color) together.

*-* repeat whatever is between the asterisks for the entire round. In the body, this will have a color indicator with it, for example, R10- *C2 (k3) C3 (k3)*

Blocks are used for keeping track of Rounds easier. Each block consists of 3 sts across by 3 rounds high. I use this form of keeping track myself, so i know for whatever size, the last block is a block of decrease.

You need three colors. This pattern is written using a candy corn theme, so a dark orange, mustard yellow and a cream color. Other color combos that I love are black, grey and white, and black, maroon and a true bright red (buffalo plaid.) colors are labeled as color 1 2 and 3 which should help confusion if you decide not to use the candy corn theme.

Sizing instructions. You will use a much larger needle for the body of the beanie. I have done lots of trial and error with this. Because of carrying the yarn, the body usually ends up super tight compared to the brim, so this pattern using the large needles allows the beanie body to stretch and fit well.

Toddler sizes will use a 4.5mm and 6.5mm.

Child size will use a 5.0mm and 7.omm

Women’s will use a 5.5mm and 8.0 mm.
